We buy on emotions and music is emotions
Sound triggers emotional and physiological responses faster than anything visual. You react to a sound in milliseconds, long before you have time to think. That’s why a shop can feel calm before you notice the lighting or the layout. Your brain reads the room through your ears first.
How does it works (and why it matters):
The moment you walk into a shop or café, background music or ambient sound activates emotional centres in the brain (areas linked to reward, memory, and mood). Studies using neuro-imaging show music can influence activity in brain regions tied to emotion, decision making and even bodily reactions. This activation often leads to release of neurochemicals such as dopamine (associated with pleasure and reward).
That emotional state influences how comfortable, alert or relaxed you feel. If the sound fits the space (calm in a boutique, warm acoustic in a café) it subconsciously signals “this place works.” If it doesn’t (clashing genres, extreme volume swings) it signals dissonance.
As a result, even before you pay conscious attention to the décor, layout or products, your brain is already setting a baseline mood: you might feel calm, relaxed, alert, comfortable or nostalgic all depending on the music. That baseline mood gives you an understanding of what to expect and how to act, or in other words it translates the business's brand values into subconscious messages .
